Convincing the butler had been the problem, but he had been coaxed into the idea by it being as much a spectacle for the guests as it would be a prank. Kiet didn’t dare broach the subject with Nelly. The stable boys loved the idea. A grand entrance for a horse master it would be, indeed!
The jacket of his costume was hanging away from the straw that seemed to cling so quickly to anything Kiet didn’t want it on. It was a fiery red trimmed with golden thread to match the fiery mischief in the fox mask, its ribbon tied neatly to the same hangar the jacket was on. Fiery and feisty, a mischievous figure to be assigned.
Not that he wouldn’t have picked such a creature himself…
“No, no, no… the ribbons are going to get knotted if you put them in like that. Braid them in, we want her to look like she’s from a fairy-“
”Kiet?”
The stable boys were quickly shushed and drew the curtain that had been hung up to hide their surprise, Kiet quickly stepping out from behind the wall as if nothing was amiss. He paused to openly admire Lucille’s dress – and playfully giving her a chance to admire his with that charismatic grin. Kiet himself was in pants to match his jacket, with a crème-colored vest. The black dress shirt a sharp contrast that was fitting for his mask, matched to black gloves and shoes. Dusting a few white hairs off the one glove in his hand, he slipped it on as he walked over to Lucille, bowing deeply and taking her hand to kiss before rising again.
“How go your party preparations, my lady?” he asked, fully aware that he was already done with what was requested of him. He had rushed his efforts simply to have enough time for his own little scheme, but he wouldn’t say so to anyone who wasn’t privy to the plan.
At least, his plan.
(ahaha I finally figured out "the plan" - it'll be hilarious and Nelly will probably want to faint XD)

((Oh my gooood can’t wait to see XD Lucille, you ain’t the only prankster anymore! ;P ))
She paused as she saw the curtain, and a slow grin had swept across her face. She opened her mouth to question Kiet teasingly with a quick quip, when she finally averted her gaze from the curtain to the man whom stood before it…
And swallowed her words abruptly.
He looked… he was… she realized in shock her mouth was still ajar, and she was quick to rectify the situation, slamming it shut abruptly and mentally shaking herself. But even as she raised her chin slightly and sought to regain some composure, she could feel the hot flush rising steadily to her cheeks. Why was she reacting like this? It was only Kiet! But as he stood there, casually dusting off his gloves, she couldn’t help a stray thought drifting to the forefront of her mind, a musing if you will, of what it might feel like to have those same hands brush her cheek…
She halted that line of thinking before she completely lost her trail of thought as to why she was here. “…Hiding something, are we?” She managed to tease, the pause had merely been a second, but twinned with the sudden blush on her cheeks, it was easily noticeable…

If Kiet noticed Lucille’s unexpected pause at his appearance, he didn’t let it show. He was getting used to seeing her in magnificent gowns, his studies growing more and more subtle as time went on.
Having something to hide made his reaction much easier to control this time.
At her question, he paused, as if insulted, and scoffed. “My lady!” he recoiled, dramatically stepping back as if slapped, mimicking Nelly for a moment. “How inappropriate would it be for me to be hiding something, on the eve of such an important party? My goodness, that just would not do!”
As the smile overtook his impression of the fussy lady, Kiet laughed. “Would you believe how fond the dogs are of me? They’re always managing to sneak off with a boot or a sock, only this time it was my glove,” he explained, shaking his head as if exasperated. Truthfully, the dogs loved him as much as he loved them, and they did indeed like stealing his belongings.
Perhaps they stole and buried the letter he had yet to find…?
Of course, teasing about hiding a secret made it about fifty-fifty chance of there being a secret at all, knowing Kiet. Which seemed to suit him fine. There was no way that Lucille could begin to guess what the surprise would be even if she did see some part of it…

“I love that swift change of subject.” She noted, with a wink. “Don’t worry, I’m not one to spoil a surprise! But it better be magnificent, if you want to top mine…” She stuck out her tongue at him playfully. Then she spun round, twirling towards him, like she had before, except faster this time, curls whipping about her head before finally resting as she stopped before him abruptly, looking up at him with her bright blue eyes and her smiling face. She took his hands suddenly, lacing her fingers with his, so that he could not easily pull away, and stood on her tiptoes, her face close to his… or at least, as close as she could get. “And will monsieur, perhaps, do me the honour of joining me for a dance, tonight?” She purred seductively, yet her grin still being able to remain child-like and playful. She was much too giddy to leave without creating a bit of a flirtatious show for him first.
Besides, she liked throwing him off guard, and that slight tinge to his cheeks that sometimes arose at her actions. It was getting even more difficult day after day to take him aback by her antics, as he seemed fast to be growing used to her... something she was not familiar with, and that she saw very much as a challenge.

“Oh, sounds like a chall-“
Kiet had begun to respond in the usual way he did, just as teasing, just as mysterious, to her jest. He had initially reacted with a dramatically raised eyebrow, as if oh-so carefully considering what she was saying. Before he could finish his sentence, she had laced her fingers with his, pulling her face close.
His immediate reaction was wide eyes blinking in surprise, the smile falling for a few moments as he processed her words. Even though he recovered to give her a knowing if suspicious little smirk, she was rewarded with just the slightest tinge to his cheeks. But only the slightest; it had been a while since she last managed a true blush, however controlled.
“Mm… can I trust you to be behaved, though?” he asked, bringing his own face in a little closer. “After all… we’ll be masked, but not alone,” he added with a whisper, managing to sound seductive and yet at the same time rather conspiratorial.
(hah, short in return lol)

((Short and yet so full of content!! I have to reply now hahaha))
Aha! Rewarded for her efforts, for there was the tinge of rouge, the slight pause as he fumbled with how to react to her. But then, it was her turn to be taken aback, if only for a moment, as he did not withdraw from her touch, and brought his face closer still... It was too perfect. If that wasn't a challenge, she didn't know what was! And she rose to it easily, much too stubborn to back down... by planting a quick peck onto his lips.
She heard a gasp nearby, suddenly reminding her that they were indeed, not alone now, either. But her unfaltering smile suggested that she didn't care... and the glint, that small sign that she was aware that she had pushed boundaries, was present in her eyes. "Never." She replied breathily to his question in regards to her behaviour, before pulling away suddenly, and dancing out of the stables with a light heart and bounce in her step.

Had Kiet been leaning any further forward, the gasp would have likely been a shriek of horror as he landed on top of Lucille. As it was, he was virtually a wide-eyed statue as she left.
He… had not expected the kiss. That… well… what did… surely she didn’t…
What?
As he finally recovered, his hand went to his lips, as if making sure they were still functioning properly to have felt what he didn’t think was a possibility. An eyebrow had remained arched in confusion, literal rather than teasing, his eyes distant in trying to work out what was going on. When he hit on what he figured was the answer, it was a little sobering… which was necessary to complete his own prank that night.
He wasn’t a noble; the scandal wasn’t just between a woman and a man k… ki… ki… getting that close and intimate, it was also a high lady and a stable master. That was probably a good part of her own interest, so much more focused on having fun and defying the “rules” than in him.
… right?
---
All too soon, it had come time for the party. Kiet had been quick to scramble for his mask before any of the nobles could arrive, which was a very, very good thing… the first guests to come were of an older couple, the very same people that Artair had been entrusted to. As it was, he could now introduce himself as Kiet, unable to help the shift in accent to keep them properly off his tracks.
It was insanity behind the scenes as well; with the servants also dressed up and masked, it was difficult to tell who was who. Kiet never had trouble locating Nelly, however, and quickly played at her nobility with an exaggerated bow, made all the more dramatic with his costume now fully in place. “My dear lady! How exquisite you look!” he admired, taking a gloved hand to kiss in a genteel manner. Lucille had gotten her way in dressing up Nelly as much as the rest of the staff, although only a handful looked flustered rather than excited. “How can a humble fox be of service to you this fine, enchanting evening?”

“Oh! Kiet!” Even with her face obscured by her mask, Nelly’s relief at seeing the stable-hand was evident. Initially, the woman had been reluctant to dress up, but after some none-too-gentle coaxing from Lucille she’d finally given in. In the end, Nelly had chosen to emulate the peacock, so her dress was an extravagant array of vibrant colours, and with the way she was currently flapping about, it suited her very well.
As the stable-hand took her hand and complimented her, she paused momentarily… and was pleased that her mask would be hiding her blush, something he always managed to place on her face with ease. “Oh, tosh!” she waved his comment away dismissively, but then brought a hand up to smooth down the front of Kiet’s outfit in an affectionate manner. “My, my, you do look handsome!” She clucked appraisingly, much like a mother hen. “Whoever the lady is, she’s in for a treat!” She exclaimed, teasingly, only half-serious. She’d wondered before now how, or why the man had managed to remain single, despite the fact that he could clearly have his pick of any number of the servants. She’d overheard a few of the maids chatter excitedly about him when he’d first arrived, and even now as he had settled in, she still occasionally caught a wistful glace from a few of the women in his direction. Even so, he seemed to have remained a bachelor- unless she was missing something, although she doubted it. Nelly liked to think she had the eyes of a hawk and would have certainly noticed if Kiet had been seeing someone secretly by now… despite the fact that she often missed the times when Lucille was up to something until it was far too late.
